Aug. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Seventy members of the Chapel Hill Fire Department have added child sexual abuse prevention to their safety arsenal. The firefighters and emergency personnel recently completed the Darkness to Light (D2L) Stewards of Children workshop, an award-winning child sexual abuse prevention program offered by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA.

“The D2L training helped us understand the problem of child sexual abuse, and gave us the tools we need to readily identify the signs and take a proactive approach to help put an end to this tragedy in our community,” says Matt Lawrence, deputy fire chief of the CHFD. “Historically, our responders have been more focused on the immediate emergencies. However, this training has enabled us to be more mindful and vigilant of the potential for physical and sexual abuse, and helped our staff become more thoughtful about the ways that we interact with children and caregivers during the outreach opportunities that we provide. In all, the D2L training was very beneficial to our department and the way that we serve our community.”

The two-and-one-half hour training session, featuring a video presentation and group discussions, illustrates the rate of incidence (one in every four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused by their 18th birthday) and teaches participants how to recognize, respond and prevent the occurrence of child sexual abuse.

The Y offered the workshop at different times for several days to accommodate the shift scheduling of the CHFD. “Our community depends upon firefighters for safety and protection and the Y is so appreciative that this group committed the time and effort to take a stand against child sexual abuse,” says Tricia Smar, D2L prevention specialist with the Y.

Free sessions of D2L’s Stewards of Children are currently be offered by the Y to the public. For further information about workshops in Orange, Durham and Chatham counties, visit http://www.d2l.org/site/c.4dICIJOkGcISE/b.6035035/k.8258/...
