Aug. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- On 14 November 1899, August Horch (1868–1951) established the company A. Horch & Cie. A few years later, he established a second company, Horch Automobil-Werke GmbH. The company traces its origins back to 1909. The first Audi car was produced in 1910. In 1909, Horch was forced out of the company he had founded. He then started a new company and continued using the Horch brand. His former partners sued him for trademark infringement, and the German Supreme Court ruled in their favor. Since he was forbidden to use the Horsch name, he met with his two best friends to come up with a new name for his company. One his friends sons was quiet until he he finally blurted out that the name Horch in Latin was pronounced “Audi”. They all agreed and their first car was produced in 1910. Audi was the first German car maker to produce a ‘left-handed drive. It was accepted because it was easier to see oncoming traffic.
In 1928, the owner of  Dampf-Kraft-Wagen (DKW), acquired the majority of shares in Audi. In 1932, Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer, to form “Auto-Union”.  Wanderer was another German car and bicycle manufacturer.
In 2006, Audi implemented LED as daytime running lights. The Audi emblem is four overlapping rings that represent the “auto-Union”. The first ring is Audi, the second DKW, the third Horch, and the fourth is Wanderer. Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagon, since 1966.
