It’s mid-summer, the kids are still enjoying vacations, the beach and outdoor activities. School might be the furthest thing from their minds, even though “back to school” sales are everywhere. Meanwhile, IRWD is gearing up for another year of education programs. “It’s never too early to begin planning for the school year,” said Shannon Reed, IRWD Public Affairs Manager. “For the past five years, we have enjoyed a successful partnership with the Discovery Science Center, bringing programs into the schools.” IRWD has a long history of providing quality education to schools in our service area. In 1984, IRWD’s beloved mascot, Aqua Duck, was born to assist in this endeavor. Since then, his likeness has appeared on educational materials and he has even made guest appearances at community events. Last year, Aqua Duck had a make-over, thanks to a local artist, and his new look will appear on updated workbooks for this school year. Grade school programs are offered for students in kindergarten through fifth grade in an assembly setting. Electronic key pads offer a high-tech method for instructing students on water science, conservation and preventing water pollution. Middle school students are offered hands-on workshops that focus on water quality, chemistry and water resources. This program culminates with a field trip to the San Joaquin Marsh, where students test the water and take a tour. Specialized programs for high school students are offered, featuring visits from IRWD water quality and engineering professionals. For the past three years, the Michelson Water Recycling Plant has been under expansion, which is expected to be completed by 2013. Tours for students in fifth grade and above will resume at that time. Community Programs In addition to school programs, IRWD offers an array of educational opportunities for the community, including tours and specialized speakers for community groups. For more than 20 years, IRWD has hosted resident tours. These tours are offered annually and hosted by IRWD board members. A variety of conservation and water education-related workshops, webinars and community events help to inform our customers on how to be Always Water Smart. Need an expert on water issues to speak to your community group or service club? Look no further than IRWD. Our Speaker’s Bureau allows for a dialogue between IRWD and the public. Our professionals will provide groups with topical water resource and water quality information. For more information about our educational opportunities, please visit our website. End
