Serra, a former UFC welterweight champion is a native of East Meadow, N.Y. He continues to fight in the UFC’s welterweight division and also owns and runs two Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) schools in his hometown along with his brother. Because of Serra’s popularity with MMA fans and his New York charm, the UFC recently tapped him to host “Fight Camp Insider with Matt Serra” mini-series.
The BJJ black belt has had a remarkable career since making his professional debut in 1999. In 2006, he appeared on The Ultimate Fighter 4 reality show. In the show’s finale, Serra defeated Chris Lytle by decision and became the Season 4 winner. The win earned Serra a shot at the UFC welterweight championship against Georges St. Pierre. In one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, Serra knocked out the champion in the first round. Serra was then named coach of The Ultimate Fighter, Season 6.
