Aug. 3, 2012 - PRLog -- A north Texas joint venture (JV) formed by mentor, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., a Texas builder for 33 years, and protégé, GCC Enterprises, Inc., broke ground on the new Red River Army Depot vehicle assembly building on Monday, June 25 in participation with local dignitaries, Depot staff and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Fort Worth District. When completed in early 2014, the $40.5 million depot in Texarkana, Texas will be responsible for the overhaul, repair and return of the Army’s wheeled, combat and support vehicles to soldiers whose lives depend on them. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Deputy Commander of the Army’s Tank Automotive Command in Warren, Michigan, four local mayors and representatives from Senator John Cornyn and Congressman Ralph Hall’s offices.

The 230,000-square-foot vehicle assembly building will be a high-bay maintenance building with interior offices and cafeteria facilities. The project includes covered storage and fuel-handling areas, and state-of-the-art mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems to perform the vehicle overhaul and assembly. The building’s exterior consists of insulated, pre-cast tilt-wall panels, and the facility will be built to LEED Silver 2.2 standards. The project is projected for completion in April 2014.

“The Vehicle Assembly Building is McCarthy’s first tilt-wall project in Texas, and the largest non-healthcare or laboratory federal project in the company,” said McCarthy Texas Division President Mike McWay. “This project not only contributes to the growth of McCarthy and GCC, but it will really help Red River support our military who are serving in harm’s way. We are honored to help America’s soldiers in their important missions, whether they are training at home or fighting abroad.”

Greg Cody, GCC’s President, added, “As a military veteran, I am proud that my company is working on another project with USACE and McCarthy. This particular facility is very important to the soldiers, giving us an opportunity to give back to the military and to enhance our construction skill set in the federal market sector.”

The building will consolidate disparate Depot activities into a single plant with five major bays to refit and refurbish all sorts of tactical, wheeled vehicles. It will be a one-stop overhaul location that brings together activities currently being conducted at eight different locations on the installation. After depot-level maintenance and refurbishment, the vehicles are returned to combat theaters or placed in depot level stocks for future contingencies.

In addition to the Red River Depot, McCarthy and GCC Enterprises, Inc.,are currently working on the $12 million Army Reserve Center (ARC) project in Denton, Texas. The ARC project was the first win for the recently formed mentor-protégé JV team, organized under the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 8(a) Business Development Program and it is scheduled for completion in April 2013.
