Aug. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- East Lansing, Mich., August 2, 2012 – Great Lakes Comnet (GLC), a broadband network and switching infrastructure company, has announced its partnership with Internet2, an advanced networking consortium led by the research and education community. Health care organizations that are part of the FCC Rural Health Care Pilot Project can now use GLC to connect to the Internet2 Network.

GLC’s Medisphere Network will now provide 79 sites within 25 different health care provider systems in Michigan with the ability to interconnect as well as have broadband access to the public Internet and the advanced Internet2 Network via the Merit Network. This network access will greatly enhance GLC’s capability to more quickly transport diagnostic information and data that will improve patient care. Medisphere’s network grants access to research facilities and cloud computing services that will broaden the capabilities of health care providers. Utilizing GLC’s 4000 miles of fiber optic network, Internet2 services will reach much deeper into underserved areas of Michigan to provide greater resources to local and regional public and private Health Care Providers.

"GLC's provision of broadband to 79 Michigan sites will enable advanced healthcare applications that can improve care for many patients, including ones with life-threatening problems," said Michael Sullivan, M.D., Internet2's associate director for health sciences.

Today, the Internet2 Network connects United States health care providers to more than 350 member organizations made up of leading universities, corporations, government agencies, and not-for-profit networking organizations. The network provides an unprecedented 8.8 Terabits of optical networking capacity and reaches more than 66,000 community anchor institutions, involving many underserved areas of the country.
