Coming up with breakthrough ideas and staying motivated is the easy part. You see, we are not supported by college endowments or federal grants. We don't have access to well equipped corporate labs. Hollywood actors and rock stars don’t put on concerts for us. Have you ever heard of “inventor aid”, or “support your local inventor” telethon? No, me neither. We are wholly supported by our own resources, family and friends. Most great inventions never see the light of day and thus millions of jobs are never created. Factories are not opened and factory supply chains are never established. The ripple of lost opportunity is felt by the whole community. From local schools, to restaurants and stores. It’s much like the scene in the clasic TV movie “It’s a Wonderful Life” when George Bailey dreams of a guardian angel and the alternate reality of what might have been. Bank loans and credit cards are a terrible way to get seed money. The debt eventually implodes most start up companies. Debt is a ticking time bomb. Venture capital firms (sharks) seems like a good source of start-up capital, until your company shares are diluted through various capital events and you end up losing controlling interest. Or worse, you just get forced out entirely. Federal, state and local businesses development agencies do not have programs to sponsor inventor concepts and prototypes. They will be glad to help you with a government backed bank loan, assuming you have a reasonable net worth that you're willing to pledge as collateral. Oh yes, I almost forgot, and an excellent credit rating. It’s still debt though, remember the time bomb? Many economic development programs will spend tens of thousands of dollars to court companies from abroad to locate in their state, all the while ignoring their homegrown inventors and entrepreneurs. Like many inventors, I write from experience! Politician’s devote a lot of lip service to how important it is to make products in America, and it is important. However, before you can make-it in America, you have to invent-it in America. When you support an inventor’s project you also support all of his/her future innovations and breakthroughs, not to mention their family. In order to get America back on its feet we need a close collaboration between the inventor and the public. If you think about it, it should be a symbiotic relationship. As a funding tool, the IRS could include tax returns with a little check box that say, “Support your local inventor, donate $10.00”. Or perhaps at the checkout line in a grocery store, the clerk asks you if would like to contribute a couple of bucks to an inventor. Ok, so maybe those aren’t great ideas, however I think you get the point. There is a better solution! For the first time ever, it is now possible for the public to effectively and directly sponsor inventors through crowd-funding web sites like Indiegogo. Pick an inventor and sponsor him with a $10, $50 or $100 contribution. Remember the grandma bus monitor that was bullied and recently raise over $703k. That was through the Indiegogo crowd-funding web site. America became a great and prosperous nation through innovation. Now, let’s let innovation make America great and prosperous once more. GO USA!
