Ruby and friends are decked out in fairy wings, enjoying smartie manicures, samples of lip gloss, and glitter tattoos at  " My Fairy Spa Party" as they celebrate the launch of a new Ontario based mobile spa party service for kids. "

The standard has changed since we were kids," said host mom Reneé, as others nodded in agreement. Gone are the days of cake, kool-aid, and "pin the tail on the donkey" in the backyard. "For a big birthday, we used to go to the play land at McDonalds," agreed another mom. "The standard has definitely changed." At the heart of this are a number of factors, ranging from a general rise in the affluence of families over the last 20 years, to changes in the kind of social media and marketing that kids are exposed to. "Kids are just hipper these days," remarks Reneé. "They see reality shows about fantasy birthdays, and they want to have that experience as well. I would have loved this when I was a kid!" she laughs. A change in the dynamic of work-life balance has also lead to the rise of the 'Super mom'. "Parents put a lot of pressure on themselves to succeed - they want to create a winning experience and incredible memories".

For Reneé, hiring professionals was the way to go. "I don't expect that someone could do my job without any training. Why do we think we can step into the role of party planner and youth entertainer, and expect it will go well? For me, calling in the professionals was a no brainer." As for the kids, a quick survey of the glittering smiles, bobbing wings, and delighted squeals confirms that this event is 'fairy-certified and approved' as well.
