July 27, 2012 - PRLog -- It is said that for most dental prosthetic work including crowns, bridges and dental implants, patients should wait at least until the age of 18. This is because the jaws are still developing and it is recommended not to do any permanent work in this period. The reason teens might need dental implants are congenitally missing teeth that have never developed. This is a specific issue if the lateral upper incisors are missing. Also, the reason can be dental trauma where the half of the front tooth or the whole tooth can be broken. Teens are very concerned about their appearance, and the visibly missing teeth can cause lots of stress to them. Specifically with dental implants, this is a very important period and dental implant surgery has to be put on hold for some time until bone has grown.

Since teeth are attached to the bone by periodontal ligament which is a living tissue made from fibers of collagen protein. This fiber is capable to change as the bone changes and moves. It also allows teeth to react to stress, pressure of biting forces and it allows movement of teeth when wearing braces. Remodeling process of the bone accompanies the changes in the periodontal ligament and movement of teeth. Implant bone connection is totally different. Dental implants are connected to the bone by a process called osseointegration. Bone literally fuses with the implant. This allows no movement and stress; even biting forces are distributed differently. When the bone grows, natural teeth will move with it as well, but the implants will not. This will affect the position of gum tissues and can cause a lot of problems for the patient. As the jaw bone grows, implants will be left behind and will appear to sink compared to the adjacent natural teeth.

For these reasons, it is the best thing to wait until the jaw bone has completely grown. Your orthodontist will be able to let you know when this process is finished by analyzing X rays and specialized radiographs. Also, this is not exact, we can never really know to the point when the person has finished their growth, but it will be a good guideline. Genetics, age, family history are evaluated as well since this information can help determine when the person has fully grown. It is very important for the jaw to be fully grown and mature before the placement of the implants and their success rate.
If the waiting period is longer, there are missing tooth replacement options such as temporary bonded bridges that can be attached to the surrounding teeth with no irreversible change to them. Do not insist on dental implants before the time is right, since the results will not be as you wanted them to be and you can cause more damage this way.
