July 26, 2012 - PRLog -- The emerald ash borer is an exotic insect native to Asia, which are currently killing ash trees in the Great Lakes region at an alarming rate.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal (July 22, 2012):  The loss of ash trees is especially alarming because communities across the country planted mostly ash trees to replace the graceful Dutch elms that were killed by disease in the 1970s. There are an estimated 700 million ash trees in the state.

According to the Wisconsin DNR - Department of Natural Resources - "The visual symptoms associated with emerald ash borer infestations are nearly identical to those we often see on ash that are infested or infected by other pests and diseases commonly found in Wisconsin. Therefore, it is important to look for a combination of at least 2 or more symptoms or signs."

Ash species attacked by emerald ash borer include green (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), white (F. americana), black (F. nigra),  and blue (F. quadrangulata), as well as horticultural cultivars of these species. Green and white ash are the most commonly found ash species in the Midwest with blue ash being rare. Note: blue ash twigs are 4-sided. All other Wisconsin ash trees have round stems.

While other woody plants, such as mountain ash and prickly ash, have 'ash' in their name, they are not true ash (Fraxinus species). Therefore they are not susceptible to attack by emerald ash borer.

Adult Emerald Ash Tree Borer beetles are metallic green in color and are 3/8 - 1/2 inch in length and 1/16 inch in width.

The Emerald Ash Borer larvae tunnel throughout the phloem and outer sapwood of Ash trees creating large galleries, eventually killing branches and entire trees.
