The Memoir I Rise has been Adapted into Feature Film Heart of a Woman Directed by Keith Holland
By: SPI Productions I Rise is the true story of Toni Newman’s transformation from an internally conflicted male to a proud, pre-operative transsexual. Born the eldest son into a strict Christian family, Toni admits knowing from her earliest days that she “was a different bird born in the wrong body.” With laser-guided sincerity, curiosity, and above all, humor and compassion, Toni tells her story of being a “sissy boy,” a scholarship student, a business professional, an escort, a drag queen, a NYC prostitute, an LA dominatrix, and finally, a transsexual attending law school in order to help her transsexual sisters in need. The DC Center for the LGBT Community is hosting OutWrite, its second annual queer books festival, on August 3rd and 4th. The OutWrite Book Fair seeks to redress the lack of a queer bookstore in the DC area, as well as promoting local queer writers from the DC community. OutWrite will be two days full of book readings, book vendors, book discussions, poetry readings and more. OutWrite will be held at the DC Center at 1318 U Street Northwest, Washington DC, 20009. Over 15 exhibitors will be selling their books, ranging from romance subgenres, action and adventure, sci-fi, and children’s books. Featured events include head / heart / soul, a reading by Black LGBT poets, a storytelling performance on gender, sexuality, and our everyday lives by acclaimed performer, Kimberly Dark, and a discussion on intersectional activism with author Sharon Doetsch-Kidder. Various queer writers will be reading, including Toni D. Newman, the first African-American transgender woman to publish a Memoir and have it adapted into Feature Film called Heart of a Woman, Brittany Fonte, and Wayne Hammond, both local authors.
