RIFE 2012 At West End Cinema Spotlight Series Will Feature Several Award Winning Films

Three critically acclaimed Directors will screen groundbreaking films at the District's most anticipated film festival. The West End Cinema will allow a great atmosphere for filmmakers and film lovers.
 
July 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Washington, DC – The 3rd Annual Reel Independent Film Extravaganza (RIFE), taking place in Washington, D.C, from Friday, October 12, 2012 to Thursday, October 18, 2012, will premiere three award winning independent films in the RIFE 2012 Spotlight Series.  Give Up Tomorrow, directed by Michael Collins, Wolf, directed by Ya’Ke and Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz, directed by Stefan Immler, will be shown at the West End Cinema in the heart of Georgetown during the week of the festival.  This is the first time Wolf and Give Up Tomorrow will be screened in DC and Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz will have its official DC premiere are RIFE.  This blend of unique, quality films is sure to make the event even more enjoyable for film lovers and makers.

Give Up Tomorrow is a documentary that examines classism, politics and capital punishment in the Philippines through the cases of Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong, two young Chinese-Filipino women who were murdered and raped after they disappeared on a stormy night.  The film follows Paco Larranaga, as he is unjustly incarcerated by law and society, as well as the grief of both Larranaga and Chiongs' mothers.  It explores corruption in a Kafkaesque government and society in an attempt to expose injustice in the complex political climate of the Philippines.  Come to see the Spotlight Series Closing Film on Sunday, August 13 at 2:00pm.  

In Wolf, Ya'Ke explores sexual abuse in a religious context through the emotional story of a young man alienated from his family.  Carl (Jordan Cooper) battles his own attachment to his abuser, as well as his tumultuous relationship with his father (Shelton Jolivette) and mother (Mikala Gibson).  Bishop Anderson (Eugene Lee) struggles to hold the family's ties as Carl faces the exposure of his darkest secret.  Exodus Filmworks presents a film intended to showcase the relationship between hardship and faith.  Check out our ‘Centerpiece’ film on Saturday, August 13 at 7:00pm

Stefan Immler's Oxygen for the Ears: Living Jazz discusses the cultural and societal impact of jazz, as well as its place in today's musical context.  The documentary, presented by Giganova Productions, highlights the birth, climax and future of jazz through the works of Esperanza Spalding, Thelonius Monk, Joe Byrd and dozens more.  This film will be featured as the Opening Night Film on Friday, August 12 at 8:00pm.

RIFE 2012 strives to present the best of independent films in a variety of categories from around the world through an environment designed to provide a networking experience with film industry professionals.  The festival will present an exhibition of local and international film works while celebrating emerging filmmakers, independent films and entertainment industry professionals.

The 3rd Annual Reel Independent Film Extravaganza (RIFE) is an event created BY filmmakers FOR filmmakers which takes place October 12 – 18, 2012 at West End Cinemas in the M St Georgetown sector of Washington, DC.
