-- (Encinitas, CA) Award winning NCAA Division I coach Mike Scolinos joins Saint Katherine College as Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach. Scolinos began his college coaching career as a player and then an assistant coach at Cal Poly Pomona. During that time Mike was a part of two college world series, winning one as a player and finishing second as a coach. Mike subsequently served as the head baseball coach at Rio Hondo College, where he shattered virtually every coaching record. After that he was the head baseball coach at Pasadena City College from 2001-2004, continuing his success by achieving the best record in nearly 40 years at the school. Mike then coached at NCAA Division I Charleston Southern University before taking over as the Head Coach in 2009 at Division I Coppin State University. At Coppin, he shattered Head Baseball Coaching records while serving in his second season and compiled a 3.2 team grade point average at a school with a 17% graduation rate. His accomplishments were covered by nearly every college baseball and baseball periodical in the country. Nearly fifty of Mike’s former players went on to play professional baseball, three of whom are still listed on current MLB rosters. Mike is the nephew of John Scolinos, the NCAA Coach of the Century.
“It is an honor to begin a great athletic program here at Saint Katherine College. I am surrounded by many great people who have created an outstanding academic institution, with an excellent plan for the future”, affirms Scolinos. “Competitive and recreational sports are a key to a life-long balanced lifestyle we encourage in our students, and Mike will be an important part of that effort”, states College president, Dr. Frank Papatheofanis.
Mike’s vision for the athletic program at Saint Katherine is to create a place where young men and women will compete athletically with schools around the nation, while participating in a program where their Christian faith is not only developed, but also witnessed faithfully through sport, so that one day our student-athletes will go on to share their faith in the NBA, MLB, NFL, schools, businesses, and in every corner of the world to which they travel.
