July 19, 2012 - PRLog -- Comprised of singer/writer Irene Merring and composer/producer Mike Genato, these two musical soul mates came together to create a collection of incredibly deep, dramatic, and traumatic songs which serve as windows into their souls. Through vulnerable words and powerful melodies, Irene delivers a profound and personal message based on her own life story. Mike sets the story against a sonic landscape that pulls the listener in multiple directions all at once, embarking on an emotional journey that perfectly matches the themes and sincerity of the lyrics. Both Mike and Irene share many influences, such as Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Nirvana and others. The most crucial commonality is their shared vision of how the story should be told. Song after song, you begin to understand them; start to experience their experience. You feel their pain and their sorrow through dramatic storytelling told with precision, further drawing in audiences. A few cuts from the album have been pre-released to give listeners a taste of what’s to come.

“Don’t Feel” describes a particular period in Irene’s life where she experienced the “numbness” stage of grief. “I couldn’t feel ANYTHING. Not love, not hope, not anger, not sadness, not even fear” states Irene. “At one point, I started feeling like I would prefer to be dead than feel nothing. I would wake up and say to myself, ‘Another day that I’m not dead’”. This became the lyrics to the bridge. The sound was inspired by Nirvana’s “Dumb” and The Cure, and combines elements of multiple genres, both organic and electronic. While heavily influenced by 90’s era music at its base, it is modernized, resulting in something sounding completely new and unique. Set on a great mid-tempo with a catchy melody, the song uses string instruments along with an electric piano creating a unique layer that initiates a feeling of seriousness and perhaps a bit of sorrow.

“It’s A Shame” is a self-portrait of Irene’s personal experience with the state of anger as part of the grieving process. The song depicts pure rage and raw emotion as Irene leads you down a dark path of disappointment and pain. This song has a fast tempo with hard, break-beating drums that build into raging, emotionally charged vocals. Anger is perfectly represented as you begin to lose yourself in the storyline. Arrangement-wise, the song is put together like a classic punk or grunge tune but the electronic elements add an industrial element; making the song worthy of mosh pit madness.

“Breathe” describes the point in your life when you surrender yourself to the now, letting go of the past and accepting who you are, faults and all. That point when you take that breath and free yourself is an emotionally exhilarating release. To fully express that, Irene and Mike brought in a talented string player named Yury Shubov. Adding live strings gave this song a new depth and dimension. The epic arrangement and orchestration on this single brings on a feeling of victory as you hear it’s crescendo build.

“Everything I Hate” is best described by Irene:”This song is about my long an unfortunate history with narcissists from childhood, up until now. My frustration with them has led me to feel a somewhat hatred for them. While at the same time, their charm and need for nurturing plays on my softened heart. I really wanted to write a song that depicted that insanity. So while some parts the song depict rage and frustration, it then changes and becomes loving and affectionate. I love how the song is paradoxical. Makes for an extremely emotional journey. ” Irene describes her battle with grace, plenty of self-searching with a superb outlet to deliver this experience. Musically, this song has balls! It’s raw emotion of the good, bad and ugly. It is high energy and then it breaks down and becomes almost sad and hopeless while always staying vulnerable and truthful throughout.

Irene Merring’s story is the foundation in which Mike feeds on. Mike Genato is a perfect conduit to capture it’s energy and essence, formulating it into an extraordinary magical experience and release it for the universe to absorb. This CD was created viewing their lives from the inside out with the realization that what they created was a work of art.
