MRC Polymers Introduces New Plastic Recycling Solutions Division
Recycling Solutions seeks to break industry barriers and help companies derive the highest value possible from “waste” materials, benefiting bottom lines and saving natural resources at the same time.
“We want to make sure material is recovered to its highest potential, recycling into low end products is great for keeping things out of the landfill but we like to take it to the next level, ideally by closing the loop” said Dean Eberhardt, president of MRC’s Recycling Solutions Division. This means taking an industrial waste stream and upgrading the material to its original state, so it can go right back to the company it came from and be made into new products.
MRC has a strong history in the automotive industry, focusing on top quality engineering resins. “We recover post-consumer bumpers, and with a proprietary process of grinding, washing off the paint and coatings, and compounding into pellets ready to be made into new bumpers” explained Paul Binks, MRC Polymers CEO.
Recycling Solutions can take this concept and apply it to even more complex waste streams. Sometimes it is as simple as finding the right application for recovered material or as complex as developing an entire new way of processing. They can also scale production and customize systems to most efficiently recycle new feedstocks.
A lot of companies are looking for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of their products, and closed-loop recycling will help them achieve this goal.
Another major area of concern is the amount of plastic being exported overseas. MRC believes plastic is a valuable natural resource, manufactured from fossil fuels, and should remain in the US. Recycling plastics saves about 70% of the energy required to produce new plastics and creates more jobs than landfilling. MRC’s Recycling Solutions Division is the next step to a more sustainable future in US manufacturing.
