Night at the Museum – A Bug’s Life

Enjoy a Saturday night of fun with museum madness, activities, pizza and snacks—while your parents enjoy the night out! The highlight of the evening continues our August celebration of all things buggy with a viewing of “A Bug’s Life.” Ages 5 -12. August 11, 5 – 9 p.m. $20 for members, $25 non-members. Sign up by Wednesday, August 8 to secure a spot. Register in person, by phone (822-7700) or at springspreserve.org.

Bet on the Farm – Farmers Market at the Springs Preserve

Join us for Mario Batali & Joe Bastianich’s sustainable farmers market, Bet on the Farm, every Thursday. Regionally and locally grown seasonal offerings include fruits, vegetables, herbs, fresh eggs, honey, nuts, dates, locally roasted coffee, and many more delectable treats. Every Thursday, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. inside the Desert Living Center. Access to the market is free. Purchases are cash only.

Toddler Time

Bring your little ones for kid-friendly activities and stories—new themes weekly! It’s a perfect time for family fun before or after you shop at our Thursday farmers market. Ages 5-under recommended. 11-11:30 a.m. Thursdays in the Activity Center. August 2 – Sponge Art.  August 9 – We Love Nature. August 16 – Cowboy Storytime. August 23 – Bubble Fun. August 30 – Parachutes Galore. Free for members or with general admission (GA).

Bike Rentals on the Exploration Loop Trail

Let the good times roll as you wheel on down our 2.2 mile Exploration Loop Trail! Keep your eyes open for birds, wildlife and breathtaking views as you follow in the path of adventurous explorers and ancient peoples drawn to the artesian waters of the spring. Weekends and holidays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Bike rental is $6 members/ $8 nonmembers per hour, includes helmet. Child carrier rentals are available. Personal bikes are not permitted on the Trails.

Summer Adventure Camps

Don’t spend one more summer day being bored! Come to day camp! Limited space is still available. Explore 180 acres of summer adventure with NEW activities weekly: nature, archaeology, animals, plants, history, drama, crafts, even swimming at the nearby Y. Our partners: Drama Kids International and the YMCA. Ages 6-12, New sessions weekly, Mondays-Fridays through August 24, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily* $180 members, $200 non-members per week *Extended after-hours care available 6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. for an additional $25/week.


EXHIBITS, SHOWS AND DEMONSTRATIONS

Trash to Treasure – The Sculptures of Dave Thompson

Artist Dave Thompson transforms old metal into magic. His recycled-object sculptures fill the Gardens with wonder and whimsy. Take a stroll and see what hidden treasures await! Exhibit on display in the Gardens through September 9, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily.

Springs Preserve Photo Contest

Marvel at how professional, amateur and youth photographers have captured “Las Vegas at Work.” That’s the theme of our fifth-annual juried photo contest, which has produced some of the most enduring images to grace our galleries. Who will win Best in Show? Come find out! Exhibit on display daily August 10 - October 7,10 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the Big Springs Gallery. Free for members or included with GA.

Envenomators: The Venomous Snakes of North America

Take a bite out of summer! Slither over and explore this exhibit revealing the surprising secret lives of beautiful and venomous snakes whose reputations are based more on fear than fact. Envenomators tells the story of four venomous snakes indigenous to North America: Copperhead, Cottonmouth, Coral and Rattlesnake. Exhibit created by Wonderworks Exhibit Company. Exhibit on display daily through September 16, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Free for members or included with GA.

BUGS! - Live animal show

They crawl. They sting. They hiss. And we run! Get up close (or not!) as our audience-participation show reveals the mysteries of the Mojave’s most amazing insects, arachnids and other invertebrates. Two live indoor shows daily July 16 – August 31 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Free for members or included with GA.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi – Feature Film

Valiant mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (29 min.) proves himself the loyal pet of a small boy and his family, protecting them from cobras in their garden. Based on a classic tale from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Daily at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. throughout August. Free for members or included with GA.


WEEKEND CLASSES, ACTIVITIES, WORKSHOPS AND TOURS

Decorate a Hat!

Use paint to personalize a hat for shade on sunny summer days! 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily throughout August. Members: $2. Non-members: GA + $3.

Bean Mosaic

Make some take-home mosaic magic when you arrange colorful beans and seeds on a wooden plaque. 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily throughout August. Members: $2. Non-members: GA + $3.

Test-tube Vase

Create your own window floral display using a test tube and decorative wire. 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. daily throughout August. Members: $2. Non-members: GA + $3.

Animals Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Get up close to lizards, bugs and snakes with zoologists in the animal care area. Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m. throughout August. Members: $3. Non-members: GA + $5.

Gardens Guided Walk

Join our experts for a free, guided walk through our beautiful botanical gardens. Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. throughout August. Guided walk is free for members and included with GA. Ask about our new weekend grilling, gardening and photography workshops in the Gardens!

Wonderful Reptiles

We see more and more of our slithery, scaly friends when it’s hot! Kids, let’s discover the amazing reptiles that live here and unbelievable things they can do. Daily at 1 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. throughout August. Members: $3. Non-members: GA + $5.

Creative Workshops

Bring your creative visions to life—our experts supply the know-how and materials, you supply the imagination! Your home and garden will be all the brighter as you take home mosaic crafts—inspired by our beautiful botanical Gardens. First Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m. – noon. August 4 – Mandala Stepping Stones – Mosaics move outside as you learn to design and take home an eye-catching mosaic cement stepping stone. Bring colorful balance to your garden! Members: $20, non-members: $30 per workshop.

Gardens Workshops

Learn the joys and rewards of desert gardening from the best in the business-our horticulturists! We repeat each workshop so attend on the day that’s best for you. Second and fourth Saturday and Sunday of each month, 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. August 11 - 12: Indoor Gardening– Duplicating Mother Nature indoors for our plant friends is trickier than many realize. Our top tips will help you successfully create a delightful indoor garden. August 25 - 26: Floral Arrangements - Beauty is in bloom! Discover how to recognize the freshest flowers and care for them. Best of all: Learn top techniques for creating beautiful floral arrangements. Members $10, non-members: $15 per workshop.

Cooking Workshops

If you crave cool and refreshing dishes in summer’s heat—and hate slaving over a hot stove!—then join us for these “fresh” cooking workshops, presented by professional chefs from the Springs Cafe, operated by the Culinary Academy of Las Vegas. Third Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m. – noon. August 18: Chilled Soup and Smoothies - Come ready to whip up these “cool customers” in the cool of the Springs Cafe demonstration kitchen: chilled Thai melon soup, classic vichyssoise (potato leek soup), even tofu berry and groovy green smoothies—vegan and delicious! Members: $30, non-members: $40 per class.
