July 12, 2012 - PRLog -- The nursing career is one of the fast growing careers around the globe. This is due to the needs of medical institutions to have more assistants to their physicians. Along with the need of manpower there is also a need to improve the hospital experience by adding people that are trained to take care of patients with utmost patience and concern. Despite though of the need, the nursing education is a bit compromised due to many students enrolling in this course. Some schools have jeopardized quality over quantity thus producing incompetent and unreliable nurses. This is one of the reasons why IMU or International Medical University has changed methods and employed high quality teachers to better the nursing education, hopefully to further influence other schools as well.

Nursing is now considered not just as a science but also an art. Thus every competent nurse must have the right skills, acquired knowledge through theories and creativity in taking care of patients. According to Ms Lim Swee Geok, Lecturer and Programme Coordinator at IMU, “Caring remains the essence of nursing. It is the caring behavior and practices that distinguish nursing  from other professions.” That’s why it is an art and not just a structured profession basing on rules and regulations.

To better the nursing education in Malaysia, IMU leads in providing excellent nursing degree program which would produce nursing graduates that will be emotionally, mentally and physically ready. Aside from training students, the university also aims at improving their teaching force by exposing themselves to seminars and nursing updates. Not only that, the faculty will also involve themselves in more clinical exposure to help students identify the best strategies in handling patients along with proper etiquette.

IMU does not settle for mediocre teaching strategies and thus involving a strict grade requirement before moving on to another major subject. The curriculum to be followed is the one mandated by the government along with the requirements of having a nursing degree. IMU has produced competent graduates and has partnered with top schools from around the globe. This move will help them in gaining more insight and to enhance the nursing education in Malaysia. It is also needed to have a high quality teaching to produce top notch nurses in Malaysia.

Lim Wee Geok is a Lecturer and Program Coordinator of the International Medial University in Malaysia. She is also a registered nurse and has expertise in Neonatal Nursing.
