Palmer Gulch Resort has accommodations available for the 2012 Sturgis Rally
From rooms in the lodge and cozy cabins to campsites at the KOA campgrounds, Palmer Gulch Resort has places to stay during the Sturgis Rally.
As August 6 comes near, motorcyclists from around the country start their journey to the Midwest for the week-long Sturgis Rally. It is during this time of the year that the Black Hills sees some of its highest traffic, a large portion of which is due to the Sturgis Rally bikers.
For those who have not reserved accommodations for the action packed week yet, Palmer Gulch has a variety of spaces available including premier rooms in the Lodge, camping spaces at the KOA Campgrounds, and mountain cabins ranging from multi-unit to 1 bedroom.
According to the Sturgis City Rally Department, roughly 400,000 people attended the rally last year. Advanced reservations at campsites and hotels have dramatically increased from last year as Sturgis Rally veterans reserve their accommodations ahead of time to avoid expensive rates that rise as the flood of people come to South Dakota.
“We get booked up really fast during the summer,” said Gwyn Wathen, Director of Lodging, Group Sales and Special Events at Palmer Gulch. “Bikers enjoy Palmer Gulch because they are close to many things to do in the Black Hills and they have a scenic drive into Sturgis for the rally.”
Some of attractions close by Palmer Gulch in the Black Hills include the famous mountain sculptures, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse, as well as a number of water sport activities. Home to some of the longest caves in the world, the Black Hills is surrounded by adventurous attractions for all ages. To give visitors traveling by motorcycle a chance to stretch their legs, various hiking opportunities are within close proximity to the Hill City resort, including Harney Peak -- the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains.

Nestled deep within the Black Hills, the 62 rooms available in the Lodge at Palmer Gulch keep guests comfortable with Wi-Fi, Cable TV, a private bathroom and air conditioning, as well as a business center, sauna and hot tub. Guests who are looking for a more rustic experience are able to stay in one of the quiet Mountain Cabins at Palmer Gulch Resort, equip with a kitchenette and fireplace.
Those who would like to experience the picturesque outdoor environment of the Black Hills are welcome to stay in the KOA campgrounds, accommodations which include full hookup standard RV sites and water-electric sites, and are complete with two outdoor heated pools, two hot tubs, three laundry facilities and a camping kitchen.
However, Palmer Gulch is not just a place to stay in the Black Hills. Unlike other campsites and lodges, Palmer Gulch Resort offers many on-site activities such as mini golf, authentic chuck wagon dinner rides, a 180-foot waterslide and live entertainment. Guests can even exchange their wheels for hooves and enjoy a guided horse trail ride.
