Amazing Watermelon Carvings and Tools Featured on WFAA-TV's "Good Morning Texas!"

July 10, 2012 - PRLog -- COPPELL, TX—June 20, 2012 – Watermelon took center stage to welcome in the first day of Summer 2012 in Dallas/Ft. Worth.  To celebrate, six elaborate watermelon works of art were unveiled on live morning television by their creator, Master Chef Joseph Poon.  But that was just the beginning of the amazing things that would be featured during the top story on "Good Morning Texas", the popular morning show on WFAA-TV’s Channel 8 in Dallas/Ft. Worth.

Host Carrie McClure welcomed Chef Jennifer Hood alongside Chef Poon.  Hood is a D/FW-based nutrition educator as well as a registered dietitian.  Both chefs were demonstrating the Dexas Melon Slicer and the large watermelon-shaped Dexas Cutting & Serving Board.  Chef Hood kicked off the segment with a quick demonstration of an easy way to prepare a seedless watermelon.  Hood quickly cut a flat surface on both ends of the watermelon, then stood it up on the end for easy carving of the rind.  Then the fascinating works of art by Chef Poon were displayed, along with a couple of carvings tricks done in mere seconds!  The segment was an artistic reintroduction to the most refreshing and nutritious summertime ritual.
 
According to Hood, Poon and the National Watermelon Promotion Board, watermelon is the “Lycopene Leader” among all fruits and vegetables, containing up to 20 mg in a 2-cup serving.  That’s 40% more than tomatoes!

Lycopene is a carotenoid that occurs naturally in colorful fruits and demonstrates powerful antioxidant benefits. Watermelon also contains rich amounts of vitamins A and C as well as potassium and citrulline. Aside from the hydration benefits, watermelon is low in calories and contains virtually no fat, cholesterol or sodium.
