CHICAGO  (July 9, 2012) – Amafruits™,  an importer of frozen açaí berry purées from Brazil, was recently certified organic under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards.  The certification confirms Amafruits’ operations are in compliance with USDA organic standards of protecting  natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and using only USDA-approved substances.

The USDA organic seal, which will be included on all açaí berry packaging moving forward, verifies that irradiation, sewage sludge, synthetic fertilizers, prohibited pesticides, and genetically modified organisms were not used in the production of Amafruits’ frozen açaí berry purées.

Amafruits açaí purées are made exclusively with wild-grown açaí berries, harvested by hand, and gathered from palm trees grown in the Brazilian Amazon state of Para, a region known for growing the best-tasting açaí. The purées contain zero additives and are never reprocessed.

“Our açaí berry palms grow without any human interaction — no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers are used,” says Rebeca Hovey, president of Amafruits.  “As a result, consumers  can count on only the purest  frozen açaí purées, while enjoying the fruit’s unique flavor and health benefits like a real native of the Amazon.”

Amafruits’ convenient 100g frozen açai packs are available in two varieties: Pure and Unsweetened; and Energy Mix with Guaraná.  Each contains at least twice the antioxidants of leading açai juice blends, 3g of dietary fiber, eight essential  amino acids, Omega -3, -6 and -9 essential fatty acids, and a rich assortment of minerals.

In the Amazon, açai is consumed daily in an unsweetened purée form; however, in the rest of Brazil, it is more commonly served as an “açai bowl,”  a frozen açai purée sweetened with syrup made from guaraná – another berry found in the Amazon regarded as an exceptional source of natural energy –  often topped with granola and fruit.
