July 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Another depressing week ahead as far as the weather goes, but at least we can look forward to some top class flat action as the three-day Newmarket July Meeting gets underway this Thursday.

In terms of the forecast around HQ it looks like the opening day on Thursday might be the best of the three days, as, if the predictions are correct, there could be some degree of rain likely for Friday and Saturday.

Anyway, that’s my Michael Fish bit over with, so despite glorious sunshine looking thin on the ground at least there doesn’t look like being any danger of the meeting being put in jeopardy – we just need to make sure, with the ground currently described as ‘good-to-soft’, that any fancies have proven form with a bit of give underfoot.

Day One...

The opening race on day one, the Group Three Bahrain Trophy, was won last year by Saturday’s Eclipse-winning trainer – John Gosden – and with the improving Michelangelo, who won here last month, still entered then providing he takes his chance he can follow-up.

Richard Hannon didn’t have the best of times at Royal Ascot, but he’s won the July Stakes twice in the last 10 years and he looks to hold another strong hand here with Sir Prancealot. Yes, the softer ground is a slight unknown, but he ran well to finish fourth in the Coventry – a race that was won by Dawn Approach who could turn out to be very good indeed. Of the rest, if Ahern runs he could be interesting over this extra furlong after flying in the closing stages in the Norfolk Stakes last time out.

Looking at the 2.25 you can be sure Mark Johnston, who won the contest back in 2007, will be well represented, but at the time of writing the yard have had just 4 winners from their last 81 runners and that would be a concern. With the final line-up yet to be confirmed the main thing to note here is that we’ve only seen one winning favourite in the last 10 renewals.

The Group Two Princess Of Wales’s Stakes could be a decent affair with the likes of Red Cadeaux and Masked Marvel still entered, while it’s worth noting Sir Michael Stoute has a tremendous record in this race – winning four of the last 7, including 12 months ago with Crystal Capella. At the moment he’s still got Fiorente engaged to run.

Day Two...

A couple of decent-looking handicaps to get things started on the Friday, but the first Group race of the afternoon is the Cherry Hinton. Godolphin and Mahmood Al Zarooni took the spoils last year and they look set to run Lovely Pass, who was a fair third in the Chesham last time at Royal Ascot – Silvestre Da Sousa is booked to ride.

So with that in mind - can Frankie Dettori, who has been snapped up to ride Jadanna, beat his employers? This James Given-trained filly was a decent fifth in the Queen Mary, but more importantly has already won in soft ground and should be fine over this extra furlong.

The Group One Falmouth Stakes could see the impressive Coronation Stakes winner, Fallen For You, back in action and now being a proven winner at the top level and having already shown she can handle the soft ground then she’s sure to be popular in the betting. Of the rest, French handler, Andre Fabre, could send his talented Golden Lilac over, while the Henry Cecil stable, who won this race last year, will be hoping their Chachamaidee can continue their good run in the contest. The key stat here is that 9 of the last 10 winners were aged either 3 or 4 years-old.

Day Three...

The Bunbury Cup and the Superlative Stakes play supporting roles to the main race of the meeting – the July Cup. Run over 6f this Group One has around £225,000 on offer to the winner and, therefore, always attracts the best sprinters in training.

Yes, there was talk of Black Caviar staying over to run in this, but we all know that’s not the case now and that will be good news for the others.
Last year’s runner-up Bated Breath will be a popular choice after running an excellent second in the King’s Stand last time out, but all his wins to date have been on good (or faster) ground so any rain might dampen his chance.

Excelebration, who normally sees the backside of Frankel, could be an interesting runner if the Ballydoyle team decide to drop him back in trip – he’ll have no trouble getting home and having won on soft and over this course and distance he rates a really solid bet if he takes his chance.

At a price Hitchens could go well – he was third in the race last year – but trainer James Fanshawe loves to have a winner at this meeting and his fast-finishing Society Rock could be the call. He missed the break in the Diamond Jubilee, but jockey, Johnny Murtagh, said after the race he’s sure he would have won over another half a furlong. He’s won on soft ground before, so providing he can get away on terms he rates a solid each-way option in the race.

Enjoy!
