World Vision to distribute relief materials to flood victims in Assam

Responding immediately to the disaster in Assam, World Vision India is carrying out the first phase of relief work which includes distribution of relief kits, setting up child friendly spaces, installing water purifiers and setting up relief camps.
July 5, 2012 - PRLog -- The death toll in Assam, where over 90% of the state is under water has risen to 77. According to government reports 2,166 villages have been affected displacing over 2 million people in the region.

Responding immediately to the disaster, World Vision India set up a child friendly space for children to spend time in a safe and friendly environment. In Amri Area Development Programme (ADP), World Vision distributed dry ration to 45 families who are worst affected by the floods. Two water purification units, sourced from local partners, have also been installed at the relief camps where over 600 people are now getting safe drinking water.

In its first phase of relief distribution, World Vision India is planning to distribute relief kits to over 595 families who are some of the worst affected by the floods. Each relief kit worth about Rs. 4374 will be distributed within the next week. Each kit consist of Food Items (Rice 25kgs, Pulses 3kg, Mustard oil 3 ltrs, Salt 2 kg, Sugar 3kg, and Raw Turmeric roots 2kg), Non-Food Items (Kitchen utensils, mosquito net, bed sheet, towel, clothing, tarpaulin, plastic mat and bucket) and Hygiene Kit (tooth powder, hair oil, antiseptic liquid, talcum powder, skin ointment, combs, cotton roll, safety pins, soft cotton cloth, bathing soap, detergent powder and ORS)

“The rainfall has reduced from heavy downpours to frequent drizzles and the flood water is receding. But with the slush and mud everywhere, especially inside houses, it is impossible for families to move into their houses atleast for another two weeks or more,” said James Haokip, Program Development Information Coordinator (PDIC) – Dhemaji ADP

World Vision India is coordinating with the government and inter-agency groups for further assessment and distribution plans. World Vision is planning to reach out to at least 4750 families with the relief kits for immediate response.
