NEW BOOK ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO LEARN TO  BUDGET

According to money expert Annie Chisambo, teaching a child how to budget with their pocket can help them avoid getting into debt when they reach adulthood.

“Most children start to receive their first pocket money when they’re about six or seven,” says Annie. “If handled well, and with the right resources, those early experiences of dealing with cash will teach them useful skills to help them manage their money when they eventually start work and earn wages.

“Kids are easily tempted to spend money on things they don’t need. Encouraging them to keep a written record of where their money goes will help them keep track of what they spend, save and share.”

Annie runs Elshaddai Money Training Limited, a company that specialises in teaching money matters to children in simple ways that are easy for young people to understand. Her book, How to Budget With Your Pocket Money, was published by Dormouse Press on June 25 to coincide with National Money Week in UK schools. A North American version of the book called How To Budget With Your Allowance was published on July 1.

“The aim of the book is to get young people thinking about what they’re spending their money on and how they can benefit from saving a little each week,” Annie said. “It also prompts them to consider how they can help others by sharing their money – either by donating to charity or buying gifts for friends or family.”

The books also have a website, www.yourpocketmoney.co.uk and www.your-allowance.com, where children can find money tips, useful information, plus money themed puzzles and quizzes.
