-- According to a new study published on the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, children living in cities are more likely to develop food allergies than those who grow up in more rural areas.
A team of researchers surveyed the parents of 40,000 children living across the country. They discovered that roughly eight percent of the children included in the survey have food allergies; however, this number varies depending on where the children live.
Of the children surveyed, 9.8% of those living in urban areas have food allergies. This number drops to 7.6% in the suburbs and again to 6.2% in rural areas. The researchers also discovered that children living in sunnier states are more likely to have food allergies than those in cloudier, rainy regions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “A food allergy is an abnormal immune response to a certain food that the body reacts to as harmful. Although any child can be at risk for food allergies, children are at greater risk if they are younger than age 3 or have a family history of asthma and allergies, a genetic predisposition to allergic disease, or elevated allergen-specific serum immunoglobulin levels.”
“EMSL Analytical offers testing services for a wide array of food allergens, including peanuts, soy, milk, egg, crustacean, and gliadin (gluten),” states Joy DellAringa, M.S., RM (NRM), CFSP, National Food Microbiology Supervisor at EMSL. “Our experienced staff of microbiologists analyzes food samples for allergens at our locations in Houston, TX and Cinnaminson, NJ.”
