Zillertal Over three days the Zillertal Bike Challenge covers 196.5 kms and 10,210 vertical metres through the Ziller Valley – a major challenge even for professional racers. What’s more to be crowned King or Queen of the Mountain you have to complete the race without the use of the mountain railways. You can opt for the ‘easier’ category of Prince or Princess of the Mountain, if you choose to use the Zillertal mountain railways to cover the steepest climbs, but even this option covers an ambitious 152.1 kms and 5656 vertical metres. Kitzbühel The origins of tennis in Kitzbühel began in the 19th century when English guests brought the sport to the Alps. Now in its 68th year the legendary Kitzbühel tennis tournament attracts the world’s elite with tennis pros, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Pete Sampras, having won the tournament in previous years. Sölden With a distance 13 kms, covering 1300 vertical metres and an average gradient of 11%, the route of the 5th Ötztal Cycling Day is a major challenge. The route starts from Sölden and heads up to the Rettenbach Glacier, taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Ötz Valley. The road is closed to traffic for the whole day, offering the participants a safe and stress-free cycle adventure on Europe’s highest glacier road. The Harakiri Mountain Run is one of the toughest 10km runs, starting from the centre of Mayrhofen at 640m before heading up into the mountains to the finishing line at 1170m, with one of the steepest section at a gradient of 70%! Ischgl As one of the most difficult mountain bike races of the whole season, Ironbike is something for iron calves. Once again this year, 79 kms and 3820 vertical metres, steep climbs up to 2800 metres and cracking single trails await the contestants of the classic Ironbike route. At the other end of the scale, any ambitious riders looking for a first taste of competition can manage the short circuit of 27 kms and 700 vertical metres. Seefeld Dedicated hikers, Nordic walkers and runners can enjoy the impressive beauty of Karwendel Alpine Nature Park, during the long distance Karwendel March from the Olympiaregion Seefeld to Achensee. The route starts in Scharnitz and journeys through the Eng valley, to Pertisau on the shores of Lake Achensee. The emphasis throughout is on providing a fascinating nature experience and strengthening the awareness of the rare flora and fauna in the Karwendel Alpine Nature Park.
