Noted Bay-Area Artist and Muralist Sirron Norris to begin the Calumet Mural Project

July 2, 2012 - PRLog -- San Francisco, CA, July 2, 2012 – Calumet Photographic is proud to announce that
they will be home to the latest Sirron Norris mural project. The Calumet Mural Project is a multifaceted work designed to enhance the appearance of the store’s exterior walls, at the corner of Bryant Street and 18th Street, diminish graffiti tagging and increase the company’s engagement with the immediate community, the city of San Francisco and the artistic community in particular.

Mural art has a rich tradition in California of beautifying inner-city environments while at the same time educating locals and visitors as to the nature and triumphs of the specific community in which the art exists. Sirron Norris is a well-established and award-winning San Francisco artist who has produced 15 murals throughout the city during the past 10 years, and he brings his signature “cartoon literalism” style to the Calumet Mural Project. “On a personal note, this project will be one for the books, and will push my talent and experience to its fullest,” said Norris.

Norris’ mural takes a playful and colorful approach to the photo industry by incorporating cameras and other photographic tools, while also referencing such local landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the Transamerica Pyramid. It features several of his iconic characters, including Blue Bear and The Block, and makes strategic use of the building’s existing windows and doors.

“We are extremely proud to have an artist of Sirron Norris’ stature bring his talents and vision to our building and our immediate community,” said Calumet store manager John Brady.  “We believe our customers will appreciate the photo references and the humor that Norris has incorporated into his design. It will also be a tremendous addition to the city’s mural tradition, which brings art into the daily lives of residents and visitors alike.”

The mural is being funded by Calumet and will be a collaboration with Precita Eyes (www.precitaeyes.org) and the 3.9 art collective (www.threepointninecollective.com).
