Trans-disciplinary conference on Early Childhood Development and Education
The Trans-disciplinary conference on Early Childhood Development and Education will be held at the Sports Science Institute, Boundary Road, Cape Town on the 17 and 18 July 2012. Delegates include role players from the education, social development and health sectors who will come together to engage the question: “What is the relationship between early childhood development and education and the millennium development goals?” Wiedaad Slemming, from the division of Community Paediatrics at the University of the Witwatersrand, and a member of the team commissioned by the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation in the Presidency and the inter-Departmental Steering Committee for ECD, will open the conference by addressing the topic: “Setting the scene – Improving the lives of young children in South Africa.”
Other speakers and workshop facilitators include Prof Xoliswa Mtose from the University of Fort Hare, who will talk about the provision of quality early childhood education in a poverty alleviation agenda, and  Prof Linda Newman, the University of Newcastle, Australia will address the “invisibility cloak” in relation to early childhood development and the millennium development goals.
Among the distinguished South African specialists who will be speaking at the conference are Prof Claudine Storbeck, from Hi Hopes, a specialist in early intervention, from the University of Witwatersrand; Vera Adams, Director of the Centre for Social Development at Rhodes University and Mr Getti Mercorio from the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust. International speakers include Mr Khoza Ramahob of the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Botswana, as well as Ailsa Purdon-Mpehle from the Catholic Education Office, in Darwin.
