Bergen County Summer Reading Programs for Children Last week marked the end of school for many elementary schools and with it, summer! Embrace running in the streets, enjoy the county fair and swim at your local pool. But when the weather gets too hot and your feet too sore, the adventure doesn’t have to stop. Many Bergen County Public Libraries are hosting the Dream Big-Read! reading program this summer. Dream Big-Read! provides children with book logs to keep track of summer reading and participating libraries will host a variety of reading club get-togethers and events available to all ages! Above all, we urge children to get out and read as much as you can, just remember to update your logs and check in for weekly prizes! The program is currently open for registration and begins at many locations June 25th with a celebration and kick-off party. So encourage your children to get involved, enhance their vocabulary and imagination while earning prizes in the process. Since it opened in 1989, Camp Ma-Kee-Ya has been located in Bear Mountain, New York. Now the Upper Lake of Darlington Park will be utilized as a day camp for Bergen County kids, and Bergen County officials welcome the addition. The Lower Lake will still be available to County residents. According to Bergen County Executive Kathleen A. Donovan, the money generated from the day camp will benefit the taxpayers of Bergen County. “Our kids work hard all year and they deserve a place to relax and have fun in a structured environment and we have been pleased with the relationship we have built with the YWCA Bergen County,” said County Executive Donovan. The new location, conveniently situated at the foothills of the Ramapo Mountains, features spacious lawns, wooded picnic areas, an open air pavilion, and tennis, volleyball and handball courts. The nearby lake allows the YWCA to continue to offer all of the same water-based activities that have drawn campers to Ma-Kee-Ya, including American Red Cross Swim lessons, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, and pedal boating. Daily activities will also include arts & crafts, nature and science, hiking, fishing, sports, music, and drama, as well as signature special events like Camp Olympics and a Talent Show. Although the YWCA will no longer provide a resident option at Ma-Kee-Ya, the camp offers an extended 9-week schedule for families in need of additional care, as well as expanded bus routes to provide transportation to and from the park. Also new this summer is an option for campers to participate in TGA Premier Junior Golf and Tennis Programs. “The YWCA is thrilled to be able to provide this exciting camp experience thanks to our new partnership with the County of Bergen,” said YWCA Bergen County CEO Helen Archontou. Archontou highlighted that the move enables the YWCA to offer three convenient and affordable camps for children ages 5 to 12. “With all of our day camps now in Bergen County—Camp Ma-Kee-Ya, Camp Y-Oak-A in Saddle River and Camp Orinda in Dumont—we look forward to serving more local families who are looking for a fun and rewarding summer option for their kids.” Click here for more details: http://www.mybergen.com/ Would you like to have information about Bergen County and northern NJ area kids' activities, community events, restaurant recommendations, local healthy living options, shopping tips and more sent to your inbox every week?
