Follow on Google News | Olympics to provide legacy for construction site safetyThe construction of the Olympic Park and Village is being held up as an example of how improved overall health of worker can reap benefits if it is treated with the same importance as safety.
According to new research conducted by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive (HAS) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the care for workers on site is one of the great legacies created by this summer’s Olympics. Lawrence Waterman, the head of Health and Safety at the ODA, revealed: “We know that many more workers have their health damaged at work than are injured in accidents. “With IES’s professional scrutiny we now have clear evidence that our programme was an investment that yielded tangible positive rewards. The business case for occupational health has never looked stronger.” The research found that the occupational health provision covering the construction of the Olympic Park and Village contributed to an extremely low accident rate and excellent worker efficiency and corresponds with industry figures for injuries and fatalities. They had provided a comprehensive occupational health programme and offered free support and advice to all contractors from a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, physicians, physiotherapists and occupational hygienists.
