Ugly Dog Media gives Michiana startups and small businesses the latest info on crowdfunding

Equity-based crowdfunding delivers a powerful new tool to Michiana area startups. Learn how to get the word out, build your crowd, and list your small business or start-up's Initial Crowd Offering at this free event.

June 25, 2012 - PRLog -- South Bend, IN -- Small businesses and start-ups have a new tool they can use to get the capital they need. The recent passage of the JOBS Act included a clause that allows for equity-based crowdfunding for small businesses, and this has already unleashed a flurry of activity as entrepreneurs get ready to take advantage of it. A free event at Ugly Dog Media, 701 S. Main St., Suite 200 in downtown South Bend, will present information about this new law, and how start-ups and entrepreneurs can use it to raise funds.

For years, the capital market has been all but closed to small businesses and start-ups. Equity-based crowdfunding will allow smaller businesses to raise up to $1 million on crowdfunding platforms such as InitialCrowdOffering.com, without many of the burdensome hurdles faced by larger companies launching full-scale IPOs.

"Equity-based crowdfunding is a brand new field in the US," said Dan Blacharski, President of Ugly Dog Media, a South Bend based, international PR and marketing firm. "Entrepreneurs are still sorting out what they need to do. There is a lot more involved than just listing your request on a platform; you need to get the word out. The most important task at hand in crowdfunding, is building your crowd. At our event in July, we're going to describe how to do that."

Crowdfunding initially gained popularity in the US with non-equity, contribution sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, which catered largely to creative projects. With the new regulations in place, newer crowdfunding platforms will assist small business ventures looking for start-up or expansion capital. Small businesses will be able to raise much-needed funds from up to 500 investors, who receive equity in the company in return. "Making a traditional stock market offer is way out of reach for small businesses," added Blacharski. "But crowdfunding opens that door, and within the next two years will bring about an incredible wave of innovation and entrepreneurship in America. We're very pleased to be a part of that, and look forward to helping small businesses right here in Michiana take that step."

The event will be held at Ugly Dog Media headquarters, 701 S. Main St., Suite 200 in downtown South Bend on Wednesday, July 25, at 5:30pm. Admission is free, but attendees are asked to reserve a spot by calling Ugly Dog Media at 574-344-2056. For information, please visit http://www.crowdfundingjumpstart.com.
