June 23, 2012 - PRLog -- Brampton ON – Bramalea City Centre (BCC), succeeding in its bid to be recognized as a regional tourist attraction, has been granted an exemption to the Retail Business Holidays Act permitting it to open on statutory holidays beginning with Canada Day the first weekend in July.

“We are exceptionally pleased to receive this exemption and particularly delighted that this comes into effect in connection with the upcoming Canada Day holiday,” said Andrew Butler, General Manager, BCC.

“Canada Day, and what we as Canadians celebrate in connection with this holiday, epitomizes our basic rationale for remaining open to the public during major holidays,” he explained.

“BCC has evolved into a vibrant gathering place, with cultural and multi-cultural overtones, attractive to tourists and residents alike.”

Since Canada Day falls on a Sunday this year, businesses not exempt from the Retail Business Holidays Act will be closed on Monday, July 2.

During the Canada Day long weekend, BCC will be open regular business hours Saturday, June 30 (9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.) and Sunday, July 1 (11 a.m. – 7 p.m.).  On July 2, the statutory holiday, BCC will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The July 2 opening of BCC will have a special family focus with the very popular and well-known ‘My Little Pony Show’ taking place in Old Navy Court at noon and again at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Exemption to the Retail Business Holidays Act required BCC to demonstrate and substantiate its capacity for supporting, enhancing and maintaining the development of tourism in Peel Region and Brampton, one of Canada’s youngest and fastest growing cities, through its dual function as a central gathering place and regional retail hub.

Situated at the major intersection of Queen St. and Dixie Rd. in Brampton, BCC currently attracts more than 16 million visitors annually. Officially opened in 1973, BCC is currently owned by Morguard Investments Ltd. which has spent more than $160 million in mall improvements since acquiring the property in 2002. A 2011 major expansion and redevelopment project increased the retail square footage of BCC to 1.4 million and added over 100 new stores.
