Dr. Pohlhaus of Baltimore Center for Laser Dentistry Leads the Dominican Republic Dental Project

Besides the Baltimore Center for Laser Dentistry in Linthicum, MD, Dr. Steven R. Pohlhaus has another practice location where he has provided much needed patient care and education.  That’s because Dr. Pohlhaus  runs the Dominican Republic Dental Project, the charitable dental initiative that focuses on bringing essential periodontal care to communities that lack the most basic dental options or means to access what care that is available.

Poverty, lacking nutrition and many other factors affect needy, hard-working individuals in the Dominican Republic and throughout the world.  One of the most widespread yet preventable results of this reality is rampant tooth decay.  The goal of the Dominican Republic Dental Project, and its active participants like Dr. Pohlhaus, is to treat and prevent the problems that occur from lack of dental care in developing countries.   As the program will be celebrating its fourteenth anniversary, Dr. Pohlhaus wants to spread the word and invite the involvement of anyone who wishes to help.

The Dominican Republic Dental Project helps patients and communities in multiple ways, which is clearly stated in the project’s mission: “…to relieve pain, restore smiles and dignity, and to give dental students a rewarding volunteer experience.” As locals receive numerous periodontal care services, which include fillings, partial dentures and extractions, young volunteers and dental students are inspired to continue service for those who need it most.  Dr. Pohlhaus reports that many of the volunteers who worked with the project early on have decided to pursue careers as local dentists within the provinces of the Dominican Republic.  The project also works with local governments and practitioners to ensure that the community continues it efforts for consistent and affordable dental care resources.
