Follow on Google News | Naadam - Mongolian Traditional FestivalNaadam festival, one of the biggest traditional celebrations in Mongolia, consists of wrestling, arching and horse racing.
The main Naadam festival is held from 11th until13th July in Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia and other regions celebrate their local Naadam before or after the date. Naadam festival is also called "the three games of men" and it involves archery, horse racing and wrestling. Wrestling Mongolian wrestling is a combination of art and sport; it tests men’s acumen and mastery of skilful tricks. More than 500 wrestlers try each other’s strength in a large open space. Mongolian wrestling costume has deep meanings; • Wrestling hat resembles ancient warrior helmet, • Wrestling boots have stable sole to help a wrestler to do tricks and avoid injury, • Tight vest across shoulders and briefs are light, easy to hold onto and show off the physique of a wrestler Highest ranking wrestlers stand on the left side and they challenge wrestlers who have lower ranking than them. The title in Mongolian wrestling is from top: • Undefeatable Giant of Nation • Wide Giant of Nation • Ocean Giant of Nation • Lion of Nation, Garuda of Nation • Elephant of Nation Hawk of Nation • Falcon of Nation, Lion of Aimag • Elephant of Aimag • Falcon of Aimag • Elephant of Soum • Falcon of Soum. Arching From ancient times Mongolian soldiers were well known for their archery skills and they could shoot their target from a back of running horse. In the 13th century every family owned a bow and arrow and both men and women could arch. It was said that a grand child of Chinggis Khaan, Yesungen once shot with bow and arrow in 520 meters. An archer owns a bow, arrows, a thumb-protector, a sleeve-protector and a case to keep his/her bow and arrows. In Naadam festival, men shoot 60 arrows from 75 meters and women shoot 20 arrows from 60 meters. Each arrow should weigh the same and should have same length. Traditionally Gobi people have rigid arrows and they shoot from straight line. Mountainous and wooded area people have lighter arrows so they aim their arrows above their target when they shoot. Horse racing It was said Mongolians are born on a horse and Mongolian children learn to ride a horse from an early age. For the main Naadam festival around 2400 horses from 6 age group, stallion, Ikh Nas /6 year old/, Soyolon /5 year old/, Hyazaalan /3 year old/, Shudlen /2 year old/ and Daaga /1 year old/ race in 2 days. Average horse race is between 20-30 kilometers and it tests strength, stamina, and training of both a horse and a rider. Usually 6-13 year old children ride racehorses and it is a law that jockeys should wear helmets, knee-protectors, and an elbow-protectors. “Giingoo” is a special song sang by jockeys to awaken spirit of their horses and make them excited about a race.
