By: King Edward's School, Bath Children in Reception at King Edward’s Pre-Prep have enjoyed a lovely Summer Term swapping their classroom for a woodland every week.as part of an initiative called Forest School. Despite the rain recently, children and their teachers have put on their waterproof coats and wellington boots and headed off to spend the day learning outdoors in a nearby woodland. On the first session of Forest School children in Reception really enjoyed reading the story of the Bear Hunt and then creating their own story and searching for bears! They enjoyed splashing in the puddles and rolling in the mud and everyone enjoyed a hot chocolate at break-time. Reception Teacher, Ms Katie Watson, commented: “After a lot of hard work and preparation it is great to introduce Forest School at King Edwards Pre Prep Forest School. The children have been very enthusiastic and enjoy learning in an outdoor environment. Every session of Forest School is linked to the curriculum and carefully planned to help the children learn key skills.” Joe Reay, a pupil from Reception summed up his experience of Forest School, he said; “I am so happy because I just love being here so much!” The idea behind Forest School is to develop children’s self-esteem, confidence and social skills. Forest School is also very good for improving their physical skills too; by running, climbing and crawling through the woodland. Future Forest School sessions will include learning how to heat water by building a fire.
