Solar greenhouse business starts to flourish

A Sussex inventor who came up with a novel solution that allows gardening enthusiasts to grow plants and vegetables while generating electricity at the same time has now installed his design of greenhouses all across the UK.

June 13, 2012 - PRLog -- Uckfield-based New Horizons Solar will be exhibiting the company’s unique solar greenhouses at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Flower Show from 3rd to 8th July after successfully launching the product last year.

The unique arrangement of photovoltaic panels on the Solar PV Greenhouse, which is made of beautiful cedar wood, is capable of generating 70 per cent of the average household’s electricity needs while providing a perfect environment for growing plants. The greenhouse is also a great solution for people who can’t or don’t want to put solar panels on their roofs.

Managing Director of New Horizons Solar Russell King, who developed the product, said: “We are exhibiting at RHS Hampton court because it is the perfect showcase for the Solar PV Greenhouse. The show is important because we believe this new product is ideal for gardeners and the type of eco-conscious people who will be at the event.”

Since launching the product last year, Russell has installed Solar PV greenhouses all across the UK including in conservation areas and national parks. The combination of an attractive greenhouse that also generates electricity is being well received by the clients and planning officers.

“Our design of greenhouse is very attractive both inside and out and can be installed in any size garden,” Russell explained.

The Solar PV greenhouse has been redesigned this year to increase its power yield and reduce costs. For instance, the model on display this year has increased its power by 36 per cent and the solar panel prices reduced by over 50 per cent. The soaring cost of electricity will make the greenhouse attractive even with reduced government subsidies.

There is a 25-year warranty on the panels and the system qualifies for the Government’s Feed-In Tariff (FiT) scheme.

Also being launched at Hampton Court is a hidden, rain water storage system. Similar solutions are very popular in Australia as they can store thousands of litres of rainwater which makes them ideal for watering through the summer or topping up the swimming pool. What makes this product different is that they can be easily retro-fitted to existing gardens such as under decking or hidden next to walls or fencing. It is modular, easy to fit and requires no excavation. The rain water storage system is new to this country – it takes the idea of water butts to a grand scale allowing people to collect enough rain water to last through the summer.

The company, which has its headquarters in East Sussex, is a member of the REAL Assurance Scheme (Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd), the Solar Trade Association and The Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA). It is also a MSC accredited installer for Solar PV systems.

Managing Director Russell King has worked in the solar industry almost from its inception. In fact, his innovations in the field while heading up research and development teams, prior to launching New Horizons Solar, have assisted in the evolution of the sector. Over the years he and his team have developed numerous innovations, gaining patents for several, to make advances across various industries. The latest of these is the development of the Energy Grow Solar PV Greenhouse. For more information go to newhorizons-solar. co. uk or telephone 01825 705050

Note to editors:

Russell King came up with idea for the Solar PV Greenhouse when he was approached by an East Sussex couple living in a listed building who couldn’t install solar panels on their roof. They are keen gardeners, so the combination of an attractive greenhouse that also generates electricity was the perfect solution. The couple is happy to be interviewed and images are available.
