June 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA : Hundreds of Philadelphians, along with Philadelphia City Councilpersons Mark Squilla, David Oh, and Bill Green, are expected to attend a community forum tonight at 7pm at Congregation Rodeph Shalom located at 615 North Broad Street. The forum is the second in a series of community meetings hosted by POWER! (Philadelphians Organized to Witness, Empower, and Rebuild) to discuss the Philadelphia Airport Expansion Project and jobs for unemployed Philadelphians. Councilperson’s Kenyatta Johnson and Curtis Jones have already signed on to work with the nearly 40 POWER! member congregations to support legislation to give preference to Philadelphia residents on jobs and economic opportunities created by the Airport expansion and other publicly-subsidized projects. “For more than 30 years, I have prayed with unemployed and underemployed folks who live in neighborhoods with high rates of poverty,” said Rev. Robin Hynicka, pastor of Arch Street United Methodist Church, a founding member of POWER! “While some of my prayers were answered and individuals found work, far too many others in the neighborhood never did. I am still praying but the prayer is bigger, bolder and in unison with clergy and laity from over 36 congregations.” The $6 billion Philadelphia Airport Expansion project, which will be financed in part by municipal revenue bonds, state and federal funds, and airport fees, is projected to generate more than 100,000 jobs in the Philadelphia region over the next several decades. POWER! is calling on City Council members to enact legislation that secures these jobs and job training programs for people in their congregations and our surrounding communities.

In addition to the Airport Expansion Project, POWER’s Center City congregations will discuss the need to improve Philadelphia’s K-12 education system and lay out a research plan to develop a reform proposal with Members of Council. For more information about POWER! or to learn more about tonight’s forum with members of Philadelphia City Council and more than 200 members of POWER! congregations go to www.powerphiladelphia.org or call (215) 232-7697.
