Gallery were originally looking for a way of showing off the new digital programme which would fit in with the new look of the Photographers’
Gallery, and give the best possible first impression. After giving us a call, Jigsaw24’s AV business manager Anthony Hammond set up a consultation session with the gallery so he could better understand the requirements of the gallery. Knowing they were looking for a solution that would visually wow customers, Anthony thought the best thing to do was to show the staff some screens in action. To get an idea of the solutions currently out there, they visited a couple of showrooms as well as the new David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy, in which the renowned British artist displays his recent digital media output.
After discussing a few options, they decided the brilliant high brightness of Sharp’s high-end 60” screens would be perfect for the Photographers’
Gallery. The PN-V602s feature local dimming, which turns off the display behind pixels which aren’t in use to give incredibly deep blacks. As they have an almost microscopic bezel around their edges, they’re great for arranging multiple screens into different configurations too.
“Arranging the screens in a 4x2 portrait style would be the first time ever the Sharp screens had been used like that,” Anthony said. “The main challenge was trying to fit the screens flush into the recessed wall in the old brick building. But once Mark, Simon and Jim from the Jigsaw24 AV team had them set up and tested in the irregular space, they looked fantastic, with a flawless image continuing between the screens.”
Anthony will now run training sessions with the staff as part of the installation, so they’ll be able to easily update the content that’s streamed to the screens from the Scala media players, and be comfortable with the Matrox video device and ATI graphics processor technology which back up the system. Jigsaw24’s full services package also includes a year’s full onsite support, so the Photographers’
Gallery are covered for an engineer to come out in case anything goes wrong down the line.

Gallery, designed by Irish architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, opened to the public on Saturday 19th May 2012. A new digital programme, Born in 1987: The Animated GIF, an exhibition devoted to the digital image format, is the first to be displayed on The Wall. Exhibitions in the three dedicated floors of gallery space began with Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky’s OIL series, with more from high-profile artists and emerging photographic talent from around the world. The Photographers’
Gallery opened in 1971 in Great Newport Street, London, as the UK’s first independent gallery devoted to photography. It was the first public gallery in the country to exhibit many key names in international photography, including Juergen Teller (fashion), Robert Capa (photojournalism)
, Sebastião Salgado (documentary)
and Andreas Gursky (contemporary art). The Gallery has also been instrumental in establishing contemporary British photographers including Martin Parr and Corinne Day. In 2009 the Gallery moved to 16 – 18 Ramillies Street, the first stage in its plan to create a 21st century home for photography.
