How to Avoid Bed Bugs While Staying In Hotels

Safety tips for bed bug prevention when traveling or staying in hotel rooms.

June 11, 2012 - PRLog -- Hotels can be extremely fun places to stay especially for those who are on vacation. However, with the spread of bed bugs due to reasons like increases in global travel and greater mobility of people, there are some necessary steps one will need to take in order to avoid bed bugs while staying in hotels. The following are some effective tips that can help avoid these blood suckers in a hotel room - thus potentially preventing a bigger problem when one goes back home from a holiday.

Upon arrival at the hotel room, the first thing you'll need to do is to conduct a visual inspection of the mattress and all the bed linens. Look carefully for any physical signs of the bugs along the seams and folds of mattress where they usually hide. It is also worth inspecting the lampshades, night stands, dressers that are beside the bed since bed bugs are also known to hide in these locations as well.

Do not leave the luggage on the bed, floor, or chairs until the initial inspection is completed. An ideal location to place the luggage is in the bath tub or bath room. Similarly, the closet and drawers should also be inspected before unpacking the clothes.

Of course, if you've done your visual inspection and you have found absolutely nothing, then you won't have to worry. However, if you've found obvious signs of bed bugs, you will need to notify the management to request for a change of room, or try and find another hotel.

In the event that one never do the pre-check and wakes up with multiple bites in the morning, quickly notify the hotel staff to ask for a change of room or move to another hotel. During the change of room or hotel, remember that bed bugs are gifted hitchhikers and that they may already be hiding somewhere in your clothes, shoes or luggage. Therefore, before moving, do a final inspection of your bags, clothes and items before re-packing them back into the luggage.

Once home, immediately bring the luggage to the bathroom to unpack. Have all washable items launder in the hottest settings and vacuum the entire luggage including the interior. Discard the vacuum bag or wash the dust canister thereafter.
