June 9, 2012 - PRLog -- There is a tremendous amount of confusion in regard to Locks and Cylinders. I am a Brooklyn Locksmith and i aim to provide the necessary information so people can understand what they are buying or having installed. For starters there are many types of locks to choose from depending on the type of work that is requested. Home security would call for the services of a residential Locksmith as Security for a business would require a commercial Locksmith.  In many cases a Brooklyn locksmith can determine what he is going to install based on the property type. When analyzing apartment buildings in New York, most will have a minimum of 2 locks on a door. The bottom lock is standard and usually comes prefabricated with the door and it is called a Mortise Lock. A mortise lock comes in many sizes, styles, makes, and models They all work on the same basic concept. They are housed inside the door and usually contain a double locking mechanism that consists of a latch and a bolt.  This lock as two features that add for extra security. The door knob has a separate locking option that makes it lock into place so it cannot turn. the second is a deadbolt feature that when activated will extract a large bolt from the lock into a cut out on the frame. This makes for an excellent method against forced entry such as prying. The Mortise Lock works with a cylinder so locking and un-locking can be obtained threw the use of a key. The cylinder is what most people mistake for the lock when they call a locksmith for the purpose of changing a key. The cylinder is a separate entity from the actual lock and must be screwed into place and tightened with a screw. So remember it is not the lock that we change when we call a locksmith ( unless broken ) it is the cylinder. The cylinder acts as a doorway between you and the lock. The better the cylinder the more difficult it will be to gain entry if a key is not being used. Standard cylinders are made from companies such as Schlage and Segal. It is a cylinder in its most basic form and it offers average security. It can be picked and bumped to open without a key, standard cylinders and locks are installed on 9 out of 10 homes in New York. High Security cylinders offer a different level of protection, they are highly pick resistant, more difficult to drill swell as key restriction and key control which impairs unauthorized duplication of a key without the proper consent.  Please look for more information from Brooklyn's favorite Locksmith.
