What:   June is Men’s Health Month and individuals, organizations and government agencies across the country and around the globe are joining in celebration.

Men’s Health Month is celebrated with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities.

There are a number of easy ways for individuals to raise awareness in their communities. For example, hosting a Wear BLUE Day; workplaces. community groups, places of worship, and others are encouraged to host a Wear BLUE event in their community. Information, tools, and resources can be found at www.wearblueformen.com

“Doing something as simple as hanging a poster in your workplace or place of worship or gently prodding your friends to get in for a check up can make a world of difference,” shared Theresa Morrow, Program Director for Women Against Prostate
Cancer (www.womenagainstprostatecancer.org)

Why:    Thousands of men lose their lives each year to preventable health problems like diabetes, heart disease, smoking related deaths. Men’s Health Month highlights these and other preventable health problems and encourages early detection and treatment of disease among men, boys, and their families.

We face an often-overlooked health crisis in the US where, on average, men live 5 years less than their female counterparts. Men too often miss out on important family milestones and may not have the opportunity to get to know their grandchildren. According to the CDC, women are 100% more likely than men to visit their doctor for annual examinations and preventive services.

“Especially in the light of such issues as the recent USPSTF recommendation against the use of PSA in the detection of prostate cancer, we must unite with others to educate men and bring them reliable information and resources,” states Scott Williams, Vice President for Men’s Health Network.

When: The month reaches its height in National Men's Health Week, a special
awareness period signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 and
recognized by Congress each year. Men’s Health Week will be June 11-17, ending on Father’s Day. Governors, too, will declare Men’s Health Week in their states.
