June 5, 2012 - PRLog -- (Cape Cod, MA)  Writers often moan that performers paraphrase and don’t respect their words; performers moan that writers create unnatural speaking rhythms untrue to their characters.  Both sides get to use the best of themselves in a unique collaboration  of Words and Action, a Playwright/Performer Collaboration with Devon Ellington on Sunday, June 25 at Three Fish & a Ram Community Art Center in Mashpee.
“I love being in the rehearsal room with actors,” says Ellington, whose plays have been produced in New York, London, Edinburgh, and Australia, and who is a co-creator of the upcoming Nemesis Project this summer and fall.  “I cut about 30% during rehearsal.  Once you have a three-dimensional human being saying the words, you can cut the unnecessary ones --provided actors connect to the text.”
The unique connection between writer and performer is explored in this four hour workshop.  Participants will learn how to create a creative language in the rehearsal room, how to start from idea, how to start from script, and how to use both writer and performer strengths positively to craft strong pieces from prompts and idea generators.  Participants can work as performers, writers, or both, and need to bring a notebook or pad of paper, pens/pencils, and a willingness to experiment, write, improve and work from scripted material.  The workshop costs $75.
Ellington washed ashore on Cape Cod about a year and a half ago after a career working backstage on Broadway, and in film and television production.  Plays she’s written are produced both domestically and internationally, and she’s scripted and script doctored for independent film.  She moved to the Cape to write full time, and she publishes under half a dozen names in both fiction and non-fiction, while teaching both online and live classes.  For more information, visit her website, www.devonellingtonwork.com.
