Follow on Google News | Post-Apocalyptic Haunted House Coming to Downtown Austin in OctoberEcopocalypse is post-apocalyptic themed haunted house. Based in Austin, the event is held at the CopperTank Event Center for the month of October in downtown Austin. The opening night gala is a fundraiser that benefits the Sustainable Food Center.
By: Ecopocalypse Matt Sparks, Peter Kirby and Pamela Harght, founders, are collaborating with local theater groups and non-profit organizations for the month-long event. The event is being used to promote local organic farms and as a fundraiser for theater groups, as well as using the opportunity to build a new concept to the traditional haunted house. Sparks came up with the idea to build a variation on the haunted house theme after attending several haunted houses in the greater Austin area. However, Sparks wanted to build something that offered more than the typical experience of being startled. Sparks says, “Ecopocalypse is a chance to experience the movie set of Mad Max or The Road set in Austin. We are not looking to scare people with chainsaws and startling. It’s scary because our beloved city destroyed by natural destruction is a potential future.” In addition to building the indoor event, there is going to be an outdoor space called Foodtopia for visitors. Foodtopia will have vendors that serve locally sourced gourmet food, along with adult beverages. “We don’t want to just scare the daylights out of people for Halloween, we’re also celebrating Austin’s vibrant arts and foods communities and the great work that is being done in Austin for promoting a healthy, sustainable future,” says Kirby. Opening night will be a private gala event benefitting the Sustainable Food Center of Austin. “We love the work the SFC is doing. We want to help them hit their fundraising goal this year for their unique new permanent site, including a training center and community garden for teaching. All proceeds from the gala will go directly to the SFC,” says Harght. The Gala event is going to feature top chefs from Austin as well as a few special guests to be announced closer to the event. Ecopocalypse will be located on 504 Trinity St. and will run for the entire month of October. Opening night to the public is Saturday, October 6th. Tickets to the gala may be purchased at a discount on Kickstarter through June 16th. After June 16th, ticket prices will be $125 per person.
