Exene Cervenka Signs Oklahoma Duo – Skating Polly – To Moonlight Graham Records

May 29, 2012 - PRLog -- (Los Angeles, CA – May 29, 2012)  It was February 2010 when punk legend Exene played Oklahoma City on her solo tour.   Little did she know that two young girls in the audience were about to, literally, rock her world!  Peyton Bighorse, then age 14 and Kelli Mayo, age 9, met one of their musical heroines later that night while accompanied by Peyton’s mother.  For Exene, that meeting turned a dark and dreary cold night into a room “filled with a warm light…I could tell that they were excited to be at the show like time-travelling historians, they knew everything!  Although they were very young, they had a beautiful energy that just beamed from their eyes.”   Now, two years later, Peyton and Kelli are SKATING POLLY, produced by their idol Exene, and will release their debut album, LOST WONDERFULS, on July 31st through Moonlight Graham Records.

Back in 2010, with some local fanfare surrounding their own early rock efforts, the girls began exchanging tracks via email with their new mentor. At that same time, Exene herself was offered an A&R position at Moonlight Graham.  When asked who she would like to sign, without hesitation SKATING POLLY was inked to the roster.  Exene chose to wear two hats with the girls as mentor and producer; for the first time, Exene chose to produce another artist.  

SKATING POLLY’s influences range from bands like Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland, to Nirvana, X and The Velvet Underground.  It’s easy to see why the duo’s tunes are filled with imaginative, poppy, punk, grunge, folk music, coupled with profound lyrics, and sung with rare emotional power.

What began as an impromptu living room show at a Halloween sleepover in 2009, quickly turned into the beginnings of a debut album.   Peyton and Kelli began with songwriting sessions, learning to play their chosen instruments and recording sessions at home with Kelli’s Dad on recording duty.   In late 2010, they released their first album, Taking Over the World, on local label - Nice People Records.  The Daily Oklahoman named the debut as one of the “Top 5 Oklahoma Releases” of the year.  SKATING POLLY have since opened for and played with many local and national acts as they’ve toured through OK City including, Broncho, The Boom Band, Luna Moth, Holly Golightly, Mr. Gnome and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart among others.
