Qualified but out of work PGCE teachers look abroad to teach TEFL

May 28, 2012 - PRLog -- Despite being considered ‘the golden age for schools’ recent figures have revealed that 38,000 teachers were unemployed in the UK at the end of last year – more than double than this time 5 years ago.

The figures have been blamed on fewer jobs for qualified teachers, over-stretched school budgets and geographical variations in the teacher job market.
For a proportion of newly qualified PGCE teachers things securing a job has been difficult. Many qualified PGCE teachers are now looking for paid TEFL jobs abroad.

Ian O’Sullivan, Recruitment Manager of LoveTEFL said: “We’re receiving lots of applications for our supported teaching programme in China from newly qualified PGCE teachers this year as a way to gain some valuable teaching experience. We’ve also seeing experienced PCGE teachers applying for these roles are struggling to find a job in the current market.

“Although these statistics are not great news for teachers looking for a decent teaching job at home, a TEFL role does give them a real valuable alternative to earn a decent wage and gain much needed knowledge and practice.

“Many out of work qualified teachers who are looking for paid employment should consider a TEFL placement. Many come with a decent wage and other benefits such as accommodation, meals and sometimes flights. They can provide a perfect stop-gap and an opportunity to weigh up future options at home whilst still remaining in the profession.”
