Horizon Forest Products Donates Building Supplies for The Haven House’s Structured Day Program

May 27, 2012 - PRLog -- RALEIGH, NC – Horizon Forest Products, a top distributor of products for hardwood flooring contractors and custom cabinetmakers in the southeast, recently donated 27 sheets of birch plywood to the Leadership Raleigh Class of 2012’s community project—The Haven House.  The Haven House is a non-profit agency that changes outcomes for struggling youth and their families.

Leadership Raleigh is a program run by the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce designed to prepare the community leaders of tomorrow.  An important part of the nine-month program is a community service project designed and executed by each team of five Leadership Raleigh participants.  This year, one of the teams chose to work with The Haven House and, in particular, provide assistance to the agency’s Structured Day Program which offers services to youth that have been short-term suspended from a school in Wake County.  The agency recently moved to a new facility and was in need of enhanced classroom space.

Randy Brodd, Regional Managing Partner of Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP and a member of Leadership Raleigh, contacted Horizon Forest Products and connected with David Guistwite, HFP Assistant Branch Manager.  Guistwite listened to Brodd’s appeal over the phone and by the next business day, had confirmed his company’s commitment to the project.

“When we selected this project for our Leadership Raleigh Project, we knew we would need to seek in kind support in the form of building materials and construction expertise,” explains Brodd.  “The total retail value of the materials needed for this project was between $1,800 and $2,000.  Horizon Forest Products stepped up and provided over half of the value of the materials needed.  They came through for us in a big way and did it without hesitation.”

The Haven House works with families, schools, government agencies, the courts, and other organizations to help kids find their way to a positive, productive life.  Leadership Raleigh member, Vickie Christos, says that the final classroom transformation was amazing.

“We are so grateful for the renovation of the Structured Day and SCORE classrooms,” says Christos.  “It's amazing what a ‘facelift’ will do to lift the spirits of our staff and clients. The subtle colors provide such a welcoming learning environment for our clients. The cabinets are awesome and so useful. We have a place for all our supplies.”

Haven House isn’t the first agency to benefit from Horizon Forest Product’s generosity.  The company was a sponsor of Christian Life Home’s Links for Life Golf Benefit and also donated materials to upfit the home of a Purple Heart Marine wounded in Iraq.  Guistwite says that Horizon Forest Products will continue to seek out and support worthy causes within the community.  

"We were happy to provide material to the Haven House project,” says Guistwite.  “Horizon feels that projects, like the one here for the Haven House, will provide young people with a sense of accomplishment and knowing there are good things still happening in this down economy that is beneficial to everyone. We hope that by providing these materials, these young people will gain an interest in the projects that are taking place and grow into leadership roles within their communities."
