An Interview with the President of DoItTennis on Wilson Tennis bags
Hans Paino, President of DoItTennis, discusses the Wilson tennis bag lineup for Spring/Summer 2012.
By: Do It Tennis is an online tennis warehouse.
CM: We are now two months into spring and summer is around the corner, which means more and more people are hitting the courts. The French Open and Wimbledon are area also coming up. What new tennis bags are we going to see from Wilson?
HP: They have come out with a very stylish leather bag, which is available in a six pack or three pack model. It's going to appeal to those who want a more stylish bag, but still want to be able to carry their racquets and clothing in a bag designed for a competitive tennis player. They have also come out with some 15 racquet bags recently. They're the first to offer a bag with this much capacity. Most people will probably take about 6-10 racquets with them and use the remaining space to store clothing, balls and other stuff.
CM: Wilson seems to be continuing a trend of making more fashionable bags. These leather bags are not the first time they've tried this.
HP: That's right, they came out with the Trento and Milan series a few months ago. You can get them in backpacks or as totes. They come with cosmetics bags and are really convenient for women. They're not going to hold more than a couple of racquets, so if you bring more racquets than that to the club, these wouldn't work for you.
CM: How popular are the Federer bags? When people buy these bags, are they doing it for the name, or is it all about the bag itself and the features it has?
HP: There are some people who see what a star like Federer wears and the equipment he uses, and they say, 'I want to get the same thing', but most people get what's going to work for them and fit their needs. The Federer Wilson tennis bag series is going to have the same features that the Tour bags have. They all have the ThermoGuard and MoistureGuard compartments, which are among the best features these bags have. The elite players generally use the largest bags that a vendor has to offer, because they bring many racquets and all their other stuff when they compete. It's easier to bring everything with them.
CM: Many people like to play tennis when they travel, but most airlines have gone back to charging extra for luggage. When you look at the larger sized Wilson tennis bag line, are these bags suitable for air travel?
HP: Yeah. These bags are more durable now than back in the day. Back when I was traveling more, I would bring them on board with me. First of all you're carrying a couple of racquets which can cost five or six hundred dollars worth of product. They're extensions of your hand, your arm so you want to make sure you're not losing them so you want to keep them by your side. Another thing is, depending on where you're traveling, if you're going overseas, you want to keep them up where everyone is and not down where it's a lot colder. That can damage the strings and affect the tension. The other thing is you don't know how the baggage handlers are going to treat your stuff.

The French Open starts on May 27 and runs through June 10. Wimbledon follows just a couple of weeks afterward, running from June 25 to July 8. It will be interesting to see what equipment and gear that elites like Federer are going to use at these events. The summer traveling season is also around the corner, so if you want to bring your gear with you, make sure you have a bag suited for air travel, like some of the multiple racquet models from the Wilson tennis bag line.
