Dr. Burgard’s keynote presentation, entitled, “Your Problem with My Body is a Problem for My Health: Promoting Peace in the War on the Fat,” will explore the problems with the current public health approaches that target weight loss rather than health and social justice. Dr. Burgard is an internationally-known expert in her field. Her many accomplishments include creating the www.bodypositive.com website, co-writing Great Shape: The First Fitness Guide for Large Women, and contributing to several major anthologies, including Feminist Perspectives on Eating Disorders, Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders, Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Research-Practice Gap, and The Fat Studies Reader (all available through Amazon).   She was recently inducted as a Fellow into the Academy for Eating Disorders, where she co-chairs the HAES Special Interest Group and co-authored its “Guidelines for Childhood Obesity Prevention Programs.”  She serves on the Public Policy Committee of the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) and is an Advisory Board member for NAAFA.
