Follow on Google News | Death of the Postage Stamp 2012With the increased price of stamps and the number of alternatives to sending a letter becoming more accessible, will the postage stamp become a thing of the past?
By: The Mailing Room Businesses are now looking for alternatives to reduce these costs, increase business efficiency and reduce the time it takes to send out their mail. With the introduction of electronic signatures through email, hybrid mail solutions allowing print & post on demand and the lowering of the access cost to a franking machine, many current stamp users are now looking at cheaper alternatives to their current process. This could affect over a million small businesses, with the majority of them expected to convert to a franking machine solution given the ease of access through this product. George Bevan, Managing Director of The Mailing Room explained, “Although other postal options are available to stamp users given the increase in stamp prices, franking is still the easiest to access and gives the largest savings. For every 2nd class letter sent a business will save 38% or 19p per letter, making it the biggest saver amongst the alternatives. Thereafter, as businesses switch, the postage stamp will become solely for personal use with all business mail accessing all postal services offered via a franking machine.” “We already have seen a marked increase in the consumer use of online greeting card suppliers such as moonpig.com & funkypigeon.com, and this again will reduce the requirement for the traditional postage stamp in the future. I would expect the business market to follow suit and eventually use easier, lower cost solution such as franking or hybrid mail.” The postage stamp will always exist but will become a premium service aimed at personal users and businesses will use a business mail alternative.
