Production Line Automation Solution for Stamping Out Steel Discs

Customer has a production line stamping out steel discs and then forming them in to a shape resembling a dustbin lid. The customer needs to ensure that the lid has cleared the stamping area before proceeding to initiate another stamp. Oil used in the stamping process covers everything giving a messy environment to operate in. The sensing distance needs to detect the lip of the lid and then stay on throughout the dished area only to turn off once the complete lid is clear of the sensing area.

Automation Solution Provided

Using an M30 inductive proximity switch offered a compact unit, with massive 40mm detection range that enabled the sensor to be positioned well away from the moving parts. Once switched by the leading lip of the dish the sensor, due to its in built hystoresis, remained on throughout the dished portion of the lid. This distance extended well beyond the 40mm sensing distance of the device.

Fitting polyethylene cable to the sensor rather than PVC provided protection against the effects of the oils present, whilst still maintaining a good degree of flexibility in the cable.
The sensor chosen offers IP68 as standard affording greater protection against the ingress of any present moisture.
