Glue Sensing Automation Application for Production Lines

A capacitive sensor fixed into an earth bonded plate and mounted in such a way as to have the paper carrying the glue run across its surface was considered. It was possible to make an electrical dielectric connection from the probe through the envelope, back to the earthed plate. A reduction in the dielectric strength points to a reduced amount of glue on the envelope surface.

This simple yet effective sensor technique allowed the customer to ensure that each envelope which passed had the adequate amount of glue on it. Overall, for the small cost of a capacitive sensor the customer was able to increase overall quality control in their production line and guarantee that each envelope processed had right level of glue on it.
